The Old Globe is in the middle of their outdoor festival featuring productions of Guys and Dolls, Robin Hood, and Hamlet, while the La Jolla Playhouse has staged a world premiere that’s drawn rave reviews.

In celebration of Henry David Thoreau’s 200th birthday, Write Out Loud and Lamb’s Players are presenting Ripples from Walden Pond on July 23rd and 24th. This one man show chronicles the life, work, and principles that have made Thoreau an enduring figure in American literature.
Lamb’s Players Theatre through the end of July is Big Fish, a musical comedy based on Daniel Wallace’s bestselling novel and the fantastic 2003 Tim Burton film.

Some of the best theatres in the area are having fun with throwbacks:
New Village Arts and Intrepid Theatre Company’s production of Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story is playing in Carlsbad for the rest of the summer. And Old Town’s Cygnet Theatre is producing Animal Crackers, a musical comedy based on the Marx Brothers Broadway hit of the same name.

Looking for even more outdoor summer Shakespeare beyond the Globe? there’s a treat in Solana Beach: the Theatre School @ North Coast Repertory Theatre is producing A Midsummer Night’s Dream at La Colonia Park. Admission is free and audiences are encouraged to bring a blanket and snacks to enjoy a family-friendly production of one of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies.
